VIOLET TYPEFACE DESIGN

Violet  is a modern reflection of early 20th century serifs. Inspired by antique packaging and lettering, the final design was laser etched into wood panels to reflect this influence.

Design Process

While designing this typeface, I began by drawing out each letter by hand before transferring and perfecting the letters on the computer. The name Violet was chosen because it was a popular flower and name, including my great grandmother's, from the time period that inspired my design. Instead of designing a type specimen poster on the computer, I decided to do something with my hands that would also reflect the inspiration for my type design. I chose various types of wood panels to be laser etched to give it a vintage signage feel. The poem used to display my typeface was found in an early 19th century poetry book about violets.
